C.R.E.W.'s History

Where We Stay

While in Louisiana we stay at Habitat for Humanity's volunteer base camp, Camp Hope. It's located in the former Beauregard Middle School. The 2007 C.R.E.W members helped to renovate this building before Habitat for Humanity officially moved in in August 2007. Before this time the base camp was at the W. Smith Junior Elementary School, a school that was slated for demolition before the hurricane struck. At this time a new school is being rebuilt on the former site.

From stories from the July 2006 teacher trip, Camp Hope had come a long way by the time the C.R.E.W. group arrived in April 2007, when staying at Camp Hope was truly like camping. Camp Hope today is a much larger and brighter facility. The only fault seems to be with the showers. Hot water is at a premium and difficult to get at the end of a long day of work.
